Manitoba 4-H'er Wins International Essay Award
Elaine Pankin, 15, of the Miami Garden Club Manitoba 4-H, won a $300 international scholarship for the best weed control essay among entrants from 14 states and three provinces. The North Central Weed Control Conference Inc sponsored the contest in Chicago last week. Pankin previously earned a $25 Manitoba prize that qualified her for the global competition. This marks the second such Manitoba 4-H honor in three years, following David Remus of Emerson who won two years ago and is now studying agriculture at the University of Manitoba.

Canada’s best cook of 1956 crowned in Toronto bak eoff
Mr Join Bushko of Vegreville Alberta was judged Canada’s best cook of 1956 in a bake off with nine competitors in Toronto on December 11. She received a cash prize of 2501 from W F McLean president of Canada Packers Ltd sponsors of the three month nation wide bakefest. The contest drew 1964 39 entries from coast to coast with Mrs Bushko’s prize winning Peresinaine recipe for Priz Velvet Cake at top ten, she was brouvat to Toronto on an all expense paid trip to compete for the big prizes.
