Mr and Mrs William Herzog celebrated their twenty fifth wedding anniversary with a large gathering at their home. Friends and relatives arrived for food and music. The couple, longtime residents of the region, were presented with a purse of money on behalf of all attendees.
A Manitoba cabinet review and Eastern Manitoba Development Board delegation outlined planned 1955 highway works in North East Manitoba. Proposals include grading and graveling 60 miles from Kirkness to St. Malo and upgrading 20 miles of No. 59, plus paving to Grand Beach and Gull Lake routes. The plan involves Beausejour, Pine Falls, and Anola corridors, with all-weather standards on several sections and bridge work anticipated, contingent on funding and weather.
The Seven Sisters Bowling Club closed its season with a December 10 gathering at Curling Club rooms. President Alex Kinghorn announced prizes for Rose Krampetz, Gerald Kuhn, and Ron Ryckman. high single went to Lil Kinghorn and high three games to Eve Schultz. George Kretchmer won a hat prize. Beausejour trip logistics noted. officers listed as A Kinghorn, A Dales, F King Sr, and G Kretchmer.
Delegates from Pine Falls unions attended the Manitoba Provincial Federation of Labor formation conference in Winnipeg on December 4 and 5. 120 delegates from 107 unions participated, electing Donovan Swailes M.L.A. as First President and Mike Sedik as vice president. A constitution was adopted and a call issued for a full-time Minister of Labor.
Mrs Isador Courchene of Fort Alexander, 60, drowned crossing the Winnipeg River one mile east of the Roman Catholic Mission on December 7 as darkness fell. Grandchild tried to save her, RCMP aided by Pine Falls police recovered the body the next morning after drag operations. Coroner released the body for burial. Walter Courchene assisted police.
Beausejour Jaycees plan a winter schedule to boost civic improvements in town and district through junior hockey. The Midget program is run by Alvin Hayes F Luke and Ed Rewacki. Officers nominated for the coming year include President F Litke First Vice President V Beley Second Vice President W Ratti Secretary Don Luy and Treasurer L Robb.
Lac du Bonnet St John’s Anglican W A met to elect 1955 officers after a December meeting. New roles include Honorable President Mrs Maxwell and President Mrs H P Clark with several vice presidents, secretaries, and guild leaders named. next meeting moved to January second Monday. Also a health notice warns of rats and other vermin in public eating places and to report unsanitary conditions to local health authorities.
W C McCulloch of the Department of Immigration spoke at the Lac du Bonnet Chamber of Commerce dinner on December 7. He noted Manitoba’s Europe market is weak for immigrants, announced plans for a Trade Commissioner, and discussed barriers to farming capital. He said immigrants become consumers upon arrival, and the department will offer language classes locally while field staff monitor settlement progress. The chamber planned a Christmas tree project and discussed hiring St John Ambulance to teach artificial respiration due to waterfront hazards from Hydro Board rock dumping.
Mr. Ed Sinclair of Gypsumville Manitoba was fatally injured when struck by a wood truck on Whiteshell Road near Upper Seven Sisters on Saturday December 4 at 10 30 p m He died at Beausejour Hospital at 1 a m on December 5 He worked as a wood cutter for Emil Weltz.
An amateur talent night sponsored by the Brokenhead M F A drew a full house at Lady wood hall on Saturday December 4 with three hours of dances skits pantomimes monologues vocal and instrumental solos and duets. Winners in the children's and adult groups were announced by judges who faced a tough task. Prizes went to Rita Kowalchuk Jeannie Heatherington Valerie Hilady Richard Rattai Ernest Morris Ronald Kubish Bert Molinski and Tennessee Wig Walk finalists.
The Lac du Bonnet sewage disposal plant began operation on December 9 with two tanks and two pumps, one electric and one gas for emergency use. The system drains seepage from homes, currently serving the village and hoping to extend to the south subdivision, urging property owners to connect.
Edward Keilback was unanimously re-elected president of the Brokenhead Agricultural Society at a Beausejour meeting held Saturday December 4. Officers named include honorary president Dr H McDairmid and secretary J Bellan. Discussions covered July 1 Sports Day Fair Day Poultry Show and fall wind-up banquet with plans to promote 4H clubs and public speaking for members.
Zone 10 Manitoba Farmers' Union calls members to a mass meeting at Beausejour Town Hall on Monday December 20 at 8 p.m. Newly elected President J Patterson will speak with invited officials including A B Weselak M P Stanley Copp M L A and William Lucko M L A. Anne Laneway notes meeting aims to voice farmers' problems and demands before the 1955 Legislature and House of Commons sessions.
Emilia Lentz a Beausejour pioneer dies at 91 at home on Dale Ave. Born in Poland in 1863 she married Julius Kaatz in 1880 and immigrated to Canada settling in Beausejour in 1905. Survived by three sons Fred Emil Ervin and daughter Mrs Harold Greenless and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral at Zion Lutheran Church on Dec 15 with Rev Rosenquist. Interment in local cemetery.
Beausejour Women’s Institute held a December meeting at the Beausejour Hotel with a candlelit yuletide social. Maria Galay sang with R A Hayes on piano, Santa visited, and gifts were given. Officers for the coming year include Giesbrecht president Shuster first vice president Rattai second vice president Drysdale secretary Geneske publicity Kozak ways and means Schnieder sick visitor Shuster honorary president Shade.
The regular Lac du Bonnet Rural Municipality council meeting on December 7 saw eight delegations. Topics included bridge approach conditions, Fatima School District assessments, water flow on NW 33-15-12E, road improvements in 2-15-10F, ditch clearances near 7-15-10E, tax remissions for Alex Walesiak, drainage work on Drain U and Drain A Floodway, and an honorarium for Reeve Ed Wojciechowski. The council also authorized purchasing road machinery for 18 000 and carried forward 1954 Drain U work due to weather. Accounts totaling 2480015 were approved with most payments to Shoals and the provincial government.
