British forces in Suez build up beyond normal strength
The Manchester Guardian discusses why British and supporting forces in the Suez Canal Zone are reinforced beyond typical levels. It argues the aim is deterrence and readiness, not imminent intervention, noting Egyptian unrest and the risk of civil breakdown, while stressing that the 1936 treaty limits and current aims constrain any direct seizing of Cairo or Alexandria. It compares today with 1882 and 1919-21, concluding no real parallel exists and emphasizing restraint.
