Local barber Don Sellers chased a deer after a doe, fired a shot that startled a buck. The frightened buck ran into Don, knocking him down after bouncing off a tree. The tale ends as Don, stunned, contemplates the improbable encounter.
An organization named the Northeastern Hospital Petitions Committee has formed to petition Lac du Bonnet area and Werner Lake for a local hospital. At a November 25 meeting at Wendigo Lodge, 36 attended. An executive committee was elected with Joyce Larson as president Gordon Boone as vice president, Mrs Puddicombe as treasurer, Dagmar Nilsson as secretary.
The Agassiz Collegiate Volleyball championships were held at Pine Falls on Saturday November 21. Pine Falls won top honors in both Senior Boys and Senior Girls, after a round robin limited by four teams Beausejour Pinawa Lac du Bonnet and Pine Falls. Pine Falls Senior Boys team featured Norman Martin Daniel Polischuk Donald Powell Bob Breton Grant Dugard Dahl Garth Bodley Byron Reichart Jack Rosent Gaylene Dolores Dean Gisele Lambert Shelley McIntyre. Pine Falls will advance to the Zone XM Volleyball.
Pinawa resident J C Gold won $17,000 for third prize in the 1970 Grey Cup pairing with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Eastern Football Conference race. Congratulations are extended to the winner.
The Lac du Bonnet Figure Skating Club invites members to a meeting at the Legion Hall at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday December 8. The club drafts a constitution, negotiates with Winnipeg teachers, and outlines fees. Treasurer Mrs Hildegarde Obirek accepts registrations at 78 McIntosh St Wednesdays 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. or by mail with cheques to her. The Lac du Bonnet and District Centennial Committee credits community support for the year’s celebrations. A December 5 old fashioned dance, Centennial gowns, and carol singing are planned. Senior Citizens pins are being mailed, with write ups in the Leader for those aged 70 plus. contact Mrs. Neil if pins or notices are missing.
Lac du Bonnet hosts the 25th Annual North Eastern Bonspiel on December 3 1970 with eight rinks from Bissett Pinawa Lac du Bonnet Pine Falls Pointe du Bois Seven Sisters and Whitemouth. The Boma J Campbell and L. won the first invitational event for the Springfield Leader Trophy. A smoker follows on December 4 at 6:30 PM with Winnipeg Seven Sisters Pinawa Pine Falls and Bonnet competing.
The University of Manitoba conferred 1182 degrees at fall convocation in late October. Notable graduates include Roger Douglas Milbrandt of Whitemouth with a Master of Arts in English and History, Mark MacDonald Fenton of Pinawa with a Master of Science in Earth Sciences, and several Pinawa and Pine Falls residents earning BA, BSc, and BEd degrees.
