Margaret Huhn Celebrates Eleventh Birthday Party

Margaret Huhn marked her eleventh birthday with a surprise party at her home last Tuesday. Rae Ann Gretsinger organized the event with skill. Twelve playmates attended for a evening of contests games and a bountiful lunch around a cake decorated with white icing a yellow birthday inscription and twelve green candles. Gifts from friends were received and the room lit by the cake candles.

Officials bar children from Pine Falls as polio epidemic measures are advised to curb disease spread. The precaution aims to prevent the illness from appearing in the community.

Weekend Visitors Dotted By Local Residents

Miss Pearl Wentz visited her parents Mr and Mrs M Wentz for a weekend. Mrs Krampetz Sr visited her son and daughter in law Mr and Mrs A Krampetz. Several families from Swan River Lac du Bonnet York England Brandon Winnipeg and Tyndall gathered at various homes. Edward Erickson suffered a painful scalding incident with tea.

Leader Representative Baker Bride in Great Falls Ceremony

Betty Jean Thorbergson became the bride of Donald L. Baker on August 14 in Anderson Hall Great Falls officiated by Rev E K Bissell. Maid of honor Agnes Hansen and bridesmaid Velma Wilde wore aqua and peach taffeta with colonial bouquets. A reception and dance followed, then the couple left for Clear Lake. Out‑of‑town guests included K W Kiefaber, T Thordarson, James D Alexander, and A W Hanks editor of The Leader.

Death of John Misiurka in Winnipeg Ukraine-born immigrant

John Misiurka died Friday at Winnipeg General Hospital after coming to Canada in 1901 from Ukraine. His wife died earlier this year. Survived by three sons Michael Martin Nicholas all of Toronto, two daughters Mrs M Moroski of Winnipeg and Mrs N Stefanyk of Toronto, and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were at Holy Cross Church Elma with burial in the local cemetery.

Boats Leave for Rice Harvest Test Run

Jack Wade's harvesting boats were launched and tested on local water this week. They will be shipped aboard the S S Luberc from Selkirk to Navigatogan and then by truck to Wallace Lake and Long Lake, with two boats bound for Wallace Lake and one for Long Lake.

A Fishy Story From a Sunlit Dining Room

Mrs. Genaske smelled smoke in her dining room and found a hole burned in her dress. An investigation showed a fish bowl on the window sill magnified the sun’s rays, starting the fire. The fish’s dwelling has been moved.

Contracts Awarded For Whitemouth Consolidated School

At a special board meeting on August 8 the trustees awarded four month school van contracts to Mike Melnick and Hugo Anderson. Ludwig De Reski was hired as caretaker and won the tender for yearly room cleaning.

Mrs. W S McGibbon returned from the east after guiding Joyce to the Empress of Canada bound for Liverpool. Marion Williams enters the Winnipeg nursing school on August 18. A personal shower for Marion, hosted by Mrs. Carr and Mrs. Ambrose, was attended by 26 guests. The community wishes Marion luck in Winnipeg. The Gittens family vacationed at Hoban’s Park Beausejour. The Eversons and Cox and Hunter visited in Winnipeg, with Mr and Mrs M Everson hosting.

Plans for Boys and Girls Clubs Fair Underway

Prodan, District Agricultural Representative, spent two days in the Lac du Bonnet area recording results from Girls and Boys Garden Clubs. Despite cutworms, overall results were good. Arrangements are under way for a Girls and Boys Fair in late September featuring Grain Garden and affiliated clubs with a strong produce display.

Wedding Shower for Katazinski Dancho Ahead of August Nuptials

A mixed shower and social at Frank Dancho's barn on August 21 honored Miss Margaret Katazinski, with Frank Dancho set to wed on the 30th this month. Guests gave gifts to the bride and groom, including a well-filled purse for the groom.

Pine Falls Golf Tourney Sets Attendance Record

The 10th annual North-Eastern Manitoba golf tournament at Pine Falls drew a record 192 contestants despite prior rain. Joe Tachan of Emhurst won the major event with a 73, Ed Aseltine was runner up at 75, while Art Land placed second in the professional field with 77.

Veterans win half of 16 Manitoba University medals

Of the 16 university gold medals presented at the University of Manitoba this year eight were awarded to veterans. Both medals presented in the agriculture faculty went to veterans.

Gardens at Pinawa and Seven Sisters were judged by Dr. H M Speechly and R W Brown of Winnipeg with E V Caton K C Ferguson and R W Queen Hughes. Jinxed Night Brings Twin Accidents In One Event

Teddy Bukoski of Tyndall suffered a broken leg when struck by a half ton truck near Orange Hall shortly after midnight on Saturday August 16. The vehicle overturned after hitting a culvert as Teddy was packed to Beausejour. occupants Raymond Blair Joe Witoski Johnny Feduik and another injured man were transported by George Hatley. Thieves then looted the unattended truck taking over 180 dollars of tools.

First Grain Shipments Reported In Town

F Boulanger arrived August 19 with the first grain load. Frank threshing rye that date and Ervin Linnert was in a dead heat on threshing but not delivery. Mike Buhan of Brightstone delivered the first wheat load on August 21. The grain was straight combined with some green kernels but a fair sample.

Britain Saves Lives of Six Million Diphtheria Immunisations

Britain reports a record drop in diphtheria with only six deaths per million last year. The Ministry of Health notes over 60 million babies immunised in six years, 472 deaths in the year, and 40 000 fewer cases than a year with 50 000 plus cases.
