Hundreds of Americans will travel up the Columbia River from Spokane to join in the 1846 settlement centennial observance. A press note reports cross border interest in the boundary dispute anniversary and related events.
Frank Snyder a Windsor house painter who wore eight military ribbons including the Victoria Cross was arrested on the street and sentenced to one year in the reformatory for falsely wearing decorations.
Plan to dig St Thomas garden plots moves forward as city authorities allocate about 50 plots for residents. Most applications reportedly come from apartment dwellers seeking space to grow.
Montreal police log a stolen car report after a resident spotted a car parked by a fire hydrant for three days. In St Georges residents celebrate a large fire siren earned through municipal and provincial cooperation. In Yarmouth a wartime knitter contributed 126 pairs of socks to Red Cross. In Drummondville a man fell before a train and was dragged but survived with only shock.
World War II veterans hosted the Ladies Auxiliary of Tyndall Branch 128, Canadian Legion, in the Orange Hall. The event honored the ladies for letters and care packages, featured sketches and songs, speeches by local officials, and a long social with lunch and dancing.
Magistrate L S Matlin LLB presided. Henry Pocaluyk of Thalberg and Joseph Macheri ck of Beausejour were fined 20.00 each for intoxication in a public place. Leo Rexus found guilty of assault and fined 25.00 plus costs and bound over for one year. Robert Nieser jailed six months for non support.
Morris Anderson leads the district with the first field plowing on April 5 as warm weather dries fields. John Duchinski follows by seeding a wheat field on April 13, marking an early start to spring farming.
Abitibi Power and Paper Co officials led by D. W. Ambridge visited Pine Falls on April 10 traveling by special car attached to the daily train. The party met local leaders, toured the mill and town departments, and attended a Chateau Hall smoker where Ambridge spoke of raising the company's standards and planning careful, lasting local improvements. The visit continued through Friday noon with a buffet reception and group engagements.
Elizabeth Gret singer, two and a half, daughter of Mr and Mrs E Gret singer, was lost in the bush behind the United Church Tuesday morning while playing with her tricycle with companion Judy Perry. Both children were found unharmed after a tense search.
Mr and Mrs William Sielke celebrate a silver wedding anniversary at their home in the St Owens district. They have farmed in the area for eighteen years and raised thirteen children including Ernest Ruth Fred Edward Sam Otto Esther Freda David Jacob Anne Louisa and Eleanor.
Elizabeth wandered off from home and was located near the creek by the golf course after a morning-long hunt. Her return brought relief to the Gretsinger family and crowd around the schoolyard. Meanwhile, workers and locals ready for wage talks traveled to Toronto for conference sessions on the 12th and 15th. Dunc McDonald, from Mafeking, arrived April 5 to visit friends and catch up on old times.
Fit Lieutenant A E F Anderson son of Mr and Mrs C J Anderson of Sioux Lookout Ontario. He was reported missing by the RCAF on June 19 1945 and is now officially dead. He died 35 miles south of Sandoway on the Burma coast. He was born in Whitemouth Manitoba later moved to Sioux Lookout with his parents at age six. He trained at Edmonton and Verdun and won the Gerald Murphy memorial award for the pilot class 57. He earned his wings and a commission October 18 1942 at Dauphin and served as an instructor at Macloed Alberta for about a year and a half before being drafted to India in December 1944. He is survived by his parents and one sister Viola.
