Ships for Sale Former Enemy Ships Offered to Americans
The United States Shipping Board announced on January 2 that thirty former enemy owned passenger ships seized after entering the war would be sold to American buyers. Ships must fly the American flag and operate on lines designated by the Shipping Board. Chairman John Barton Payne said the goal is to exit the Government shipping business by selling all passenger and cargo ships to private interests, with further sales of other vessels in preparation. The bid call targets former enemy ships to dispose of them promptly. Sale terms differ from those for new tonnage and will be followed by actions on additional vessels.

Chicago paper charges Brundage and Wilkerson with streetcar bias
A Chicago Republican paper accuses Attorney General Brundage and Utilities Commission chair Wilkerson of favoritism toward street car companies. It notes Brundage and Wilkerson earn salaries from the public, questions their actions on seven and five cent fare orders, and links this to a broader push to abolish the Utilities Commission. The piece cites court moves to shift cases to Brundage and critiques for not enforcing judgments and book audits.
