Coal wage rise sparked protest over price hikes
Ellis Searles for the United Mine Workers argued that a 27 percent wage increase does not justify a 65 cent to 1.50 per ton coal price rise. He said production costs can rise only 40 to 50 cents and blamed operators for passing costs to the public. He warned of no peace while operators seek excess profits and lifted price restrictions.
