About forty Spencer Masons attended Ruthven lodge to witness the third degree conferred by Grand Master Whitaker of Iowa. A Ruthven delegation and women’s Metho dist Ladies Aid prepared a lavish banquet. Speakers included J. W. Kirkpatrick, J. Cory, Rev J. O. Thrush, and Grand Master Whitaker, whose remarks praised fraternal effort and urged vigilance against sectarian dangers. The October 4 1918 city council meeting resolved to have the outside tile chimney on 31 W Smith building removed if possible. All six members voted for the motion with Culbertson to direct the City Attorney and proceed as required.

About ten days ago D C Gillespie transferred lots 8 1 1 in block 24 of the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul rail way addition to Spencer to A H Wilson of Ida Grove. The lots lie east of the Pitcher Implement house on East Fifth street. Wilson has a back foundation 75 by 150 feet for a tie or feed barn and is a Tama Jim relative who plans to visit Spencer in December. Ringling Bros big show may come next spring and the town will host horses for attendees.
