A basement tile tie in Haygarth's drug store area, now Louie Goyette's barbershop, was built without a permit. The mayor ordered removal, a warrant halted the action, and the council later reached a satisfactory adjustment. The case prompted praise for the mayor’s fearless enforcement.
Last Friday evening the Royal Arch Masons held a meeting in their hall. Three candidates were raised to the Royal Arch degree named Robert Hanson Fred Jenson and L H Rasmussen. They faced obstacles but achieved the goal amid trumpets and a ceremonial atmosphere with a fine collation provided by E B Taggart and assistants.
Royal Neighbors meet with Mrs B F Keir on East Seventh Street next Thursday afternoon. Royal Neighbors invited. Ladies Aid of Christian church to hold market at Dickinson and Bisbee meat market Saturday Nov 8. Queen Esther society of Methodist church to host bazaar and handy sale Wednesday Nov 10 at 1 pm. items for Christmas, canned fruit and jelly offered, all invited to inspect. Ladies Aid of Congregational church to meet Friday the 7th at Mrs KE Munger’s home. gentlemen invited to supper at 9:00, 14 cents. Swedish Lutheran oyster supper at Lincoln church Monday evening Nov 7. all invited. Pythian Sisters regular meeting tomorrow Wednesday night with services at Homesteaders hall. Rev Miss Atkinson preaching 10:46 am. Young People prayer meeting 6:45 pm led by Miss Hobby. sermon 7:30 pm by Rev Martinson. Everyone invited.
A series of church meetings shows rising interest. Mrs Armstrong delivered an excellent address to the fathers, who received carnations pinned by her and her helpers. Two conversions occurred Sunday night, with Rev Cochran from Sioux Rapids and his wife attending. Rev Resse of Spring Lake will visit part of the week. Next Sunday morning the preacher will speak at the morning service and Mr Armstrong plans a mothers meeting in the afternoon.
Sunday visit described with Mr O E Stauffer Mrs Stauffer K Morningstar and a Mt Harrie friend going to Roland. Brown returned from Wis with wife visiting, Ruthven shoppers also noted. An earlier gravel pit accident involving G S Brown and Mr and Mrs G M Dyer caused concern but no injuries occurred.
As jurors were seated the defendant withdrew a not guilty plea and pleaded guilty to assault with intent to inflict great bodily injury. The court accepted the plea and at 1:40 pm Judge Coyle sentenced him to one year in the Fort Madison penitentiary. The judge gave sharp but timely advice.
Friends and neighbors gathered at the Geo Stanton home in Riverton Friday afternoon to honor Mrs Stanton who leaves this week for Texas. A lunch was served and a solid gold ring was presented as a token of esteem. Spencer attendees included Mesdames Robi Hanson C B Ross and Misses Ella Little Mary Rosenkrans.
Miss Lois Grown hosted a twenty two guest Halloween party with stunts ghost walk and fortune telling in the basement. Guests enjoyed a pleasant time. At Rob Koch residence the Bairns held a Halloween gathering with unusual manifestations of deathly themes. Library notes show October book activity with bindings, repairs, new readers and circulation figures.
Listings show multiple estate transfers in Spencer and nearby towns including Webb and Griffin Adams add ons. Transfers involve G W Boyden, C W Stuyden, J A Reid, Grace M BE Church trustees, Henry Green, Myron W Dewey, Patrick Voley, Margaret Foley, M E Griffin, Louis LaGue, and others with sums ranging up to 88,400 and parcels described by blocks and lots. Proceeds support local clubs and institutions, including Lincoln Hoss Club.
The Lincoln Boys Club Juniors defeated the Young Men's Sunday School Class team at the Lincoln Boys gymnasium, taking thirty nine scalps while the Young Men collected eleven. Mrs D Rohde visited sister Mrs August Sage of West Lane and traveled through Spencer en route to Estherville to visit relatives for two weeks.
Social items from the Mathieson home and surrounding area list birthday celebrations north of town, visits by Mrs. W Fr Teldt, Hob Wegner, Hinnie Gordon, Birdie Stone, and others, plus a Kessie Knee and Ed Goyette wedding at home. A large attendance, gifts, and a ball followed the ceremony.
Corn husking prospers after snow melt with yields from forty to sixty five bushels. Mrs Geo Stanton plans a move to Texas on the eighteenth as Mr Stanton makes a home there. Mrs R Gilbert from Garabes visits, recovering from lung trouble. Miss Clara Paddock resumes school in district No 7. Lewis Paddock returns from Minnesota. A small group enjoys an evening at C M Kilpatrick’s. Miss Georgia Smith takes a two week vacation from teaching. John McAndrew owns a small river boat for a ditch crossing. W Brienger’s progress slows due to breakage. the front bridge removal for boat passage remains incomplete.
Local football clash between Sibley and Spencer high schools produced lively plays. Spencer showed fine training but lacked weight. Sibley held a 9 to 0 relative edge. Community notes cover visits, new arrivals, and upcoming sales with social events and local business updates.
Sunny week follows blustery days as corn fields hum. Mary Parsons stays with W O S Lang for winter while renting home in north Spencer. A H Livingston and Kenneth visit Ed Claypool. Mentions school Halloween program, Miss Clara Wolcott visiting her parents, Rev and Mrs Wolcott, and Miss Myrtle Waldo traveling to Warsville for Liedaath. Also references Miss Amy Buthel visiting Gena Grubb and teacher exams by Berdie Stone, Iona Whiteford, and Gena Groby in Spencer. Mrs. Os cut Hart recovering after illness. Drank Putman leased his property to Harry Emerson. Epworth League hosted Halloween party at Miss Gena Grubb’s home. Young men of the Congregational church hosted Halloween party for the young ladies class. Alby reports a fine time.

James Mitchell returned from Jake Tuesday for medical care. Holmés Keel and Houlson sold farms to Eastern buyers. Mrs. Aveley convalescing after operation. VanSickle children ill with siliths. The Spencer Woman's Club held a Tuesday meeting in the library rooms with programs on Lady Gregory Folk Lore and Myths of Ireland led by Mrs Kuckler. Mrs A W Chamberlain interpreted Master Sink s Minebird, and Mrs Chas Howe reviewed Bernard Shaw s Major Barbara by paper read in her absence. resolutions thanked many contributors and hosts for the convention and sessions.
Rev J O Thrush of this city is invited as participant in the Iowa State Convention of the National Reform Association to be held in Des Moines Now Land 14. The convention aims to promote religious and moral instruction in public schools, protect Christian features of civil government, and improve observance of a six day work week.
Last evening Mr and Mrs N C Bang celebrated their thirtieth wedding anniversary at the Bang home on South Main street. About one hundred friends attended a simple supper prepared by their three children Mesdaines A Vestegaard Thompson and Chris Bang. Rev Sool Was present and spoke. Friends presented the couple with a rug linen and a generous purse of money.
The U S government orders St Louis Missouri as the central depot for sale of all seal and other furs seized in Alaska. This move elevates St Louis to the world's greatest fur market and boosts the Missouri metropolis.
South Headland reports multiple social visits with Mr. and Mrs. J. Severson of Sioux Rapids calling on Mrs. G. Keny Lumlay and others. Niel McMullen and Luther Catingham attended Osborn schoolhouse meeting Sunday. Jaseur Reng visited Geo Reng and wife in Lee Center. Mrs. O. Petty visited the KJ Sarvold home Monday.
West Gillett Grove residents and guests including Mr and Mrs Gee Mills and Haze traveled to Spencer for an afternoon. Mrs C Newell hosted the Urcies Aid of Greenville on Thursday. A Halloween party at C F Johna home drew a good crowd Friday evening with Mills Audie Sivas and other local youths. Mrs Mildred Korth visited Storm Lake for a weekend trip. Theeler of Peterson and Mr and Mrs Lewis Theeler spent Sunday with Geo Mills and Chas Ashburn in Spencer.
