Death of Mrs. Andrew Hummel Shocks Sister in California
Mrs Wmn Castendyck received word Sunday of her sister Mrs Andrew Hummel s death in California. A letter dated January 31 reported illness then better. Mr and Mrs Hummel and Mrs Syder had gone west last October. Hummel suffered bronchial trouble plus other complications. Body to arrive Saturday for burial locally.

High School Notes And Oratorical Winners
The high school held an oratorical contest with prizes awarded to Floyd Trewery first Altice Evans second and LeRoy Larson third. Donald Morgan Elnora Giedeman and Esther McWhirter earned second place medals. Emmetsburg beat Spencer 27 to 20 in a rough game at Union Hall. Next game slated with Estherville Friday the 16th. A new girl arrived at the home of Oscar Cunningham and Mr and Mrs Charles Walters welcomed a baby girl last Sunday.

Successful Operation Restores Sight for Mr Yates in Mason City
Mrs. Wm Yates returned from Mason City with her husband after an eye operation for a growth resembling a cataract removed the day they arrived. The procedure was highly successful and sight is restored. He will stay away from home for several weeks.

Rail wreck derails two cars on Minneapolis bridge
Last Sunday at about 3 40 p m a freight train brake drum dropped causing two cars to derail as they backed onto a bridge. Several stringers on the span were broken but only the track at the end of one car gave way. The man span of the bridge was not injured and no one was hurt.
Lotte Hendrickson Wins Ciphering Contest Prize
The other prize winner in the ciphering contest is Lotte Hendrickson of Districsy. On November 4 in Lincoln Township, she joins the first prize recipients. All participants are to be congratulated for their line work and effort. many non-winners are commended.
