Philadelphia convention memoirs by a Nashville delegate
A Tennessee observer recalls attending the Philadelphia Democratic convention in August 1868. He describes the crowd, the star on his coat, the postmaster jokes, and the tense mix of Northern and Southern delegates. He reflects on party unity, fears, and hope, ending with a satirical anecdote about Johnson and Grant supporters.
