A narrative memoir recalls Elder Abinileck Gavitt a Kentucky native and former pastor who sided with emancipation era Democrats. The piece describes his final illness grief at his death in 1867 his conflict over Reconstruction and loyalty to the party and his fraught last hours with family and community members.
Letter details a late 1867 suicide by a congressman who, distressed by politics and illness, shot himself after retrieving a note from his mirror frame. He had drafted a will and codicil noting desire to die from sorrow and constitutional decay. He was 65 and suffered diabetes melitus.
Mr Honsmay reports a Dublin to Westmoreland balloon trip. The launch at 4:10 pm carried the craft over Clontarf Howth and Ireland’s Eye with grapnel ballast adjustments and later rough rain. The craft drifted toward Wales or Lancashire before landfall near Appleby England, where onlookers assisted and the crew endured hunger and fatigue.
A whaling vessel named the Déniq, missing a year after leaving the Shetlands, reappeared in Bona's Woe harbor with all fifty aboard dead or dying. Islanders found Captain Lerwick and nine dead shipmates aboard, while thirty five crew were ill. The ship had endured an Arctic winter and the crew clung to bodies as death continued.
