Henry J. Carter was struck and killed by lightning while returning from work in the village on a Thursday afternoon. He and a companion sought shelter, resumed walking, then separated. Carter, near home, was struck on the elevation by the brick yard, his clothes burned and body marked by the electric shock. He lay prostrate all night in heavy rain. no nearby tree could explain the strike. His wife kept vigil, and the coroner's inquest returned a verdict of death by lightning.
