From Mackwood's Magazine an extract details a skirmish where a group of women and Mexican cavalry clash. Dragoons hesitate, a surge of riders advances, and Fanning and thirty riders unleash measured volleys. The account notes nerves and courage of volunteers facing a cavalry assault.
An account from the Southport Telegraph describes a brutal skirmish with Mexican forces in Texas. American officers and a core of sharpshooters hold a riverside position, repelling cavalry charges, destroying an artillery piece, and repelling two battalions of infantry amid a chaotic riverbank battle. A mysterious deserter figure appears and exits, while hidden riflemen on the island unleash lethal volleys that turn the tide as panic spreads through the Mexican ranks. The action ends with a rout and unclear motives behind the enemy’s collapse.
In the House January 2 1644 Mr Wentworth argued for dividing the river improvement amendment. He pressed lake and northern frontier water interests while keeping Wisconsin Michigan and Ohio concerns under Commerce Committee. He warned against shifting control away from the lake interests and cited ships trade tonnage and harbor needs to justify supporting the northern lakes program.
