Coalition pushes higher gas tax and fees in Illinois
A coalition of 22 groups led by Illinois Transportation Improvement seeks higher auto and truck license plate fees and an increased gasoline tax to fund a state highway and bridge program. The plan would raise license plates to 44 dollars a year for most vehicles and adjust recreational vehicle fees by weight, with gasoline tax up to 11 cents this year and 12 cents next year. Governor Thompson shows no immediate push for new highway financing this fall despite some support.

Lincoln Amendment targets state's rising property taxes
Illinois residents face higher tax bills as the Lincoln Amendment proposal seeks tax relief. Ward Hertsted, chair of the Illinois Lincoln Amendment Committee, says the measure would allow citizen initiated limits on property tax increases and enable voter approval of certain state laws. Supporters have gathered tens of thousands of signatures toward placing the question on the November 1982 ballot, with other groups also pushing voter initiated legislation.
