Health insurance costs rise in 2011 sparking debate
The Kaiser Foundation and Health Research and Educational Trust report employer sponsored health plan premiums rose 9 percent for family coverage and 8 percent for individual plans in 2011, the fastest growth in years. Premiums have more than doubled since 2001 while wages grew 34 percent. Kaiser cites rising costs, insurer profits and the health care reform act as factors. The law’s provisions contributed 1 to 2 percentage points to the hike. Employers and workers typically share the cost, with employers often paying about 70 percent or more.
