Mrs. Victor Thorne, 44, confessed abandoning her mentally impaired teenage son in Miami’s airport after a 30 minute Juvenile Court hearing ordered a psychiatric examination. The boy Richard, 10, mute since infancy from encephalitis and pneumonia, is in Dade County care.
U N Secretary General Thant told the Security Council the cease-fire was not holding as India and Pakistan blamed each other for renewed fighting near Fazilka and along the Sutlej. Pakistan claimed two Indian attacks were repulsed with casualties and prisoners.
The United States denounces the Viet Cong executions of Capt Humbert Versace of Baltimore and Sgt J C Roraback with claims of wanton murder violating the Geneva Prisoners of War Convention. Hanoi radio says they were killed Sunday in a Viet Cong liberated area after being accused of crimes against South Vietnamese people. U S B52s conducted a strike 55 miles northwest of Saigon near Tay Ninh. results not announced.
Archaeologists report core drilling into Monks Mound suggests Indians inhabited only 22 of 100 feet, with major mound material from Mississippi River changes. James Porter of Washington University calls the discovery major, noting it enhances the mound’s significance despite few drillings. The state plans 1.5 million dollars to expand Cahokia Mounds State Park for archaeology and tourism.
Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri states India will not allow a U N peacekeeping force on Indian soil to supervise the Kashmir cease fire with Pakistan. He says only observers on the old pattern may be admitted and confirms discussions with U Thant about frontier peace.

In Hayneville Alabama Circuit Judge T Worth Thagard refused to postpone the trials of two white men tied to civil rights era killings in Lowndes County. Thomas L Coleman 55 faces manslaughter charges for the shotgun death of Jonathan Daniels and Collie Leroy Wilkins Jr 21 is charged with murder in the death of Viola Gregg Liuzzo. The federal court in Montgomery was set to hear a motion aiming to bar jury trials until a federal suit to expand Negro participation on juries is resolved. If not blocked Coleman may begin Tuesday with Wilkins following Wednesday depending on trial length. The move sparked denouncements from state and defense lawyers amid threats reported to both sides.
Engineers said closing of Carlyle Dam spillway gates may miss 1966 completion. Until gates close the lake covers 5 000 acres. partial closure in 1967 would expand to about 12 000 acres, with full size not until Shelbyville Dam work ends, possibly 1969, and eventual absorption of Kaskaskia River flood waters would exceed 60 000 acres.
East St. Louis police officials testified at Illinois Crime Commission hearings in Belleville about organized crime, noting 1 000 percent better conditions since 1951 and reporting destruction of more than 1 000 slot and pinball machines since 1963. They said no prostitution, minimal drug traffic, and no local console machines beyond two tracks within 25 miles.

A barge fire and successive explosions on a Mississippi River tow near Caruthersville Missouri halted river traffic. The ethylene laden barges drifted to the Missouri bank and were snagged on a sandbar as Coast Guard reported the liquid non toxic. Pemiscot County sheriff said the towboat Lady Marjorie pushed three ethylene barges when the fire started and crewmen cut loose the barges.
A four hour tropical storm battered Mazatlan and much of western Sinaloa causing unknown damages and downed communications. Debby the tropical low was expected to intensify after moving into warm Gulf waters, while Hurricane Carol and Debby tracked erratically offshore with no immediate land threat.
