Illinois to Consider Small Farm Experiment Stations

Cragle urged establishing several small experimental stations across Southern Illinois to reflect farm and forest land diversity. He said actions would follow long discussions with the citizens advisory committee. Dixon Springs remains the only southern U of I experimental station, with Brownstown near Vandalia as the next closest.

Illinois study outlines smaller stations and farm centers plan

Cragle outlined a plan to create smaller stations in the Mississippi Ohio delta and in Union Pulaski County with an agronomic center in Williamson Saline Franklin counties. A beef cattle center could arise in Marion Jefferson counties, while Dixon Springs would stay an agronomic center but reduced in scale and staff. The forestry program at Dixon Springs likely expands despite limited land.
