A Sunday event at the Varsity Center for the Arts commemorated the Sept 11, 2001 losses with more than 100 attendees. Exhibits by Laura Chamness and Najjar Abdul-Musawwir from Carbondale featured photos and charcoal portraits, alongside a video piece by David Burns of SIU.
The Carbondale Interfaith Council hosted a Sunday Interfaith Service of Hope and Healing at the Carbondale Civic Center marking 40 years of love in the community and the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Over 200 attended. Representatives from a dozen faiths gave brief talks and choirs from First Presbyterian and Carbondale Community High School performed under Carlyn Zimmermann. Meera Komarraju led Hindu group and Marisa Winegar sang a peace song solo and taught it to attendees as a round. The event balanced mourning with gratitude for those aiding survivors.
