In a close NFL opener the Lions beat the Rams 27 to 23 while the Rams react to a strong Bears start to the 2012 season. The game showcased key plays from both offenses and defenses.
Lions beat Rams 27-23 as Matthew Stafford hit Kevin Smith with 10 seconds left after St. Louis took the lead on a late Greg Zuerlein field goal. Rams intercepted Stafford three times in the first half and led 23-20 with 1:55 remaining but could not close out the comeback.
Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns while Brandon Marshall piled up 119 receiving yards and a score. Matt Forte added 80 rushing yards and a touchdown, as Chicago topped Indianapolis 41 21 to spoil Andrew Luck debut. Colts QB went 23 of 45 for 309 yards with a fourth quarter TD to Donnie Avery.
SIU used a hurry up attack to drive 69 yards in 3 minutes 14 seconds and reach within 10 of Miami Ohio at Yager Stadium. The RedHawks held on 30-14 after a late TD, while coach Dale Lennon praised the sharper tempo and its growing impact on SIU’s offense.
Southeast Missouri State visits Southern Illinois at Saluki Stadium for a 6 p.m. kickoff. SEMO sports a 1-1 record while SIU sits at 0-2 as both teams seek a bounce-back in-state rivalry with key players and a renewed ground attack.
