Reagan Delivers $85 Million Check as Labor Day Parade Snub Sparks Clash
President Reagan, snubbed by New York unions at the Labor Day parade, visited Manhattan to present Mayor Edward Koch with an $85 million U S Treasury check for the Westway highway project. Koch called the visit brilliant maneuver as labor officials denounced Reagan across rallies. The parade drew up to 225,000 participants, including PATCO strikers and 150 bands, amid criticisms of his anti union stance and promises of jobs from highway spending.
