The wife of Steve Lybarger, 49, said he killed the dog after she refused to go outside for a barbecue. Lybarger was arraigned on felony animal torture and misdemeanor animal cruelty charges and is jailed in St. Clair County on a $20,000 bond.
Tiffany Hopp, 27, of Keokuk, Iowa, was sentenced to seven years after a Hancock County jury convicted her May 2 of conspiracy to commit first degree murder. She was acquitted of attempted murder and home invasion and remains jailed in Carthage without bond as she awaits transfer to prison.
Deonte N Reed of Centreville pleaded guilty in St. Clair County Circuit Court to residential burglary after prosecutors described his involvement in a plan tied to preventing police interference with drugs. A plea deal dismissed residential arson charges. A separate federal ruling rejected a bid to block the Keanu Reeves film Hardball over alleged misrepresentation of Little Leaguers.
Democrats hold a 9th tiebreaking seat in the redistricting commission and must craft maps that edge incumbents and new candidates, stacking districts from Chicago to its suburbs while isolating downstate cities. They expect to consolidate power by targeting suburbs and packing GOP voters into fewer districts.
United Airlines and its 15,000 mechanic and related workers asked the National Mediation Board to end federally mediated talks, arguing that waiving the last barrier could end the 21 month stalemate. The board had not acted, with discussions paused after a two week respite. The union says the decision is needed. United cites economic realities after a year of industry slump and nearly 1 billion dollars in losses.
The mediation board rules the sides are too far apart to settle at the bargaining table and may release them from talks. Separately negotiations in Washington continue between United and its 30 000 ramp workers and customer service employees with mediation underway.
A Belleville Township High School East senior faced an eight day suspension after protesting a car flag ban in auto shop class by displaying a Confederate flag with an American flag and a “Heritage not hate” sign. Principal Gerald Rains confirmed a student displayed a Confederate flag but declined to name him, saying discipline was appropriate.
Motorola Inc announces 2000 additional layoffs as telecom equipment demand remains weak, sinking stock by 15 percent. The firm has now cut 22 percent of its workforce since December, with ongoing cost reductions. Cellphone and semiconductor divisions show some improvement, but overall 2001 sales stay flat in the third quarter.
