Palestinian gunman killed after shooting near West Bank

A Palestinian gunman opened fire on an Israeli construction crew near Kfar Zita and was killed by guards, the second such attack in two days. The violence coincides with a budget crisis as Prime Minister Sharon faces Labor Party resistance over a $145 million settlement funding cut. In Hermesh, a separate attack killed two teenage girls and a woman as soldiers responding to the scene killed the gunman. The Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade claimed Tuesday’s attack. Palestinian militants have repeatedly targeted settlers amid a dispute over land for a future state. About 200,000 settlers live in the West Bank and Gaza among 3 million Palestinians. Arafat’s new interior minister pledged to curb attacks inside Israel but exclude settlers from that policy.
