Springfield AP Backers of a plan to overturn Gov. Thompson veto on nursing home aid secured a compromise expected to cost the state 8 to 9 million dollars, far below the 22 million in the bill. Rep. Senate also endorsed a Medicaid cost containment plan to save about 106 million and reduce projected fiscal year spending to 843 million from 949 million.

Senate rejects cut in Judges pay raises

Illinois Senate defeats a bid to slow a scheduled judges pay raise, voting 27 to 27 on spreading increases over four years. If approved, seven Supreme Court justices would earn 75,000, appellate justices 70,000, circuit judges 65,500, and associate judges 60,000 annually, with raises continuing through four years.

Illinois House Rejects Enterprise Zones Veto Override

The Illinois House failed to override Gov. James R. Thompson's veto of the enterprise zones bill 95 to 72, sending the reform plan toward the legislative scrap heap. Critics called it economic snake oil while supporters argued for private investment to revive blighted urban areas with tax breaks and eased regulations.
