SIU Sues Two Electrical Firms Over 1979 Faner Hall Fire

Southern Illinois University Carbondale sues Giles Armature and Electric Works of Marion and Missouri Electric Works Inc. in Jackson County Circuit Court for 420000, alleging defective maintenance of a transformer that overheated and caused a November 22, 1979 fire damaging Faner Hall. The suit, filed on behalf of the SIU Board of Trustees, seeks 60000 in each of four counts against Giles Armature and Electric Works and in each of three counts against Missouri Electric Works Inc., which operated in Carbondale as a contractor for Giles. Allegations include failed repairs and tests, improper varnish curing, inadequate warnings, and lack of employee training. Company representatives declined comment.
