A local crime overview notes the area’s felonies and provides guidance for residents seeking help to quit smoking. Officials emphasize resources, support groups, and counseling as part of a community health push tied to crime prevention efforts.
The Southern lists upcoming meetings for numerous entities including Akin and Anna-Jonesboro school boards at 7 p.m., Benton Park Board at 6 p.m., Carbondale groups at noon and 7 p.m., Coulterville and Cobden village boards, Crab Orchard and Egyptian high school boards, Elverado and De Soto water panels, Ewing and West Frankfort offices, and Frankfort and Goreville boards. Also notes Franklin County and Jackson County committees, Mass Transit District, and Johnson County unit offices with times and venues.
Jackson County will create a dedicated human resources office by mid November to streamline payroll health insurance retirement fund and workers compensation duties. County Clerk Larry Reinhardt said two full time positions at about 47000 each will replace four part time roles and save taxpayers money. The board also approved fee increases at the county clerk's office expected to raise about 60000 in additional revenue. See human resources on page 4B.
John D Homan reports on Herrin educator Morgan who leads a 15 student recycling class at John A Logan College. Since August the group has collected over a ton of recyclables and works with three Marion centers. Students like Louis Kerr praise the program for sparking community involvement and pride. Morgan began this effort after volunteering at a Texas folk festival and aims to instill hands on recycling habits in future teachers.
Steven W. Buntin, a 12 year veteran in juvenile and adult probation, was named chief probation officer of the Fourth Probation District covering Franklin and Hamilton counties. Chief Justice James M. Wexstten cited his administration and innovative work as ideal for the newly reorganized Second Judicial Circuit structure.
Hilary Shelton urged restraint as the nation faces possible war costs. He cited racial health disparities and urged repairing schools and expanding health care while war planning proceeds. He noted African American women have higher breast cancer death rates and men have higher heart disease risks.
