Reagan denies considering nuclear war only in Europe
President Reagan said the United States would not fight a nuclear war “at Europe’s expense” and warned such claims are deception. He noted a limited exchange of tactical weapons would not automatically spark world war while his top adviser was fired for speaking without White House approval. NATO ministers and allied leaders, including Dutch and British defense officials, observed no policy shift and urged calm amid the debate.

Court upholds death claim after special overtime job
The Illinois Supreme Court upheld a $250,000 workers compensation award to the family of James Aulich, an electrician at Commonwealth Edison’s Kincaid plant, who died in a car-train collision on his way home from a Sunday overtime call. The court ruled two hours of travel time under the union contract constituted pay for time spent in travel, not mere travel expense, and thus arose out of and in the course of employment. It cautioned the commission against relying solely on the two-hour pay period to justify the award and affirmed the basis in the extra travel pay for short overtime callbacks.

The
Appointment in Jackson board disputed over eligibility
Republican Larry Lipe claims Kay Allen is not eligible to fill the vacancy on the Jackson County board. Allen, chosen by Democratic precinct committeemen for District 5, lives in Murphysboro Township Precinct 10 Route 4 Carmondale. Disagreement centers on which district map is in effect and when it takes full force for vacancies. The county clerk and ISBE counsel weigh the map date as the legal review continues.
