At Carbondale City Hall 1 p.m. Thomas Henderson of the Department of Commerce and Community Affairs will speak on exemptions for enterprise zone building materials. Sponsored by Greater Egypt Planning and Development Commission. 549-3306.
Government boards and committees meet at 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Benton and Mount Vernon locations including the Benton Civic Center and 201 Bailey Lane conference room. Meetings cover planning, finance, school board, hospital board, and a sheriff department liaison in Murphysboro.
Angela Williams filed a Franklin County Circuit Court suit accusing Karen Coe and Dr. John Coe of battery and other claims regarding an incident in July at Coe's Benton office. Williams says her daughter Taylor Burlison was shaken and struck by Karen Coe while tampering with a computer mouse. Damages sought total 50,000 with additional claims of emotional distress and negligence. Both defendants declined comment.
A star studded chef lineup at Herrin Civic Center for the second annual Star Chefs Auction raised funds for the March of Dimes. Notable participants included David Fombelle Kevin Fleming Somsak Kansang and Marilyn Kunz. The event highlighted Erica Reeves named Ambassador Mother for the campaign. Reeves described her premature son William Henry Dailey II born at 2 pounds 3 ounces now 7 pounds 9 ounces and still hospitalized after surgeries and transfusions. He is improving and could return home once feeding by bottle begins.
Margo Mathis testified she saw Rodney Jones and Mark Crymes fight near her apartment in Carbondale on Sept 28. Crymes allegedly took a gun from Reginald Cavitt and fired, striking Jones who died from blood loss after hospital treatment. Crymes faces murder and weapon counts while Cavitt remains at large.
Danielle Castanon, an 18 year old from Herrin, was selected from hundreds at an Chicago area car show to model for Super Street magazine advertising Nitrous Express. She plans to attend college to study criminal justice and views modeling as a possible but unlikely path.
Two Marion men, Jonathan Hanks and Christopher Poland, pleaded guilty to Class 2 felonies for involvement in multiple burglaries in the Creal Springs area. Each received 48 months probation and $473.26 restitution. Neighborhood Watch program credited with helping curb incidents. Hanks and Poland admitted taking two Yamaha dirt bikes from Jim and Sandy Wooten and a Honda ATV from Kenneth Tanner. See Garnati page 5B.
