Illinois Youth Center in Murphysboro urged closed
The Illinois Juvenile Justice Commission asked closing the Murphysboro center as the first step toward consolidating Department of Juvenile Justice facilities. In a letter by retired Judge George Timberlake the move is described as appropriate due to high costs and low efficacy of incarceration as a strategy amid a shrinking youth population. The eight juvenile prisons hold 1,754 beds but only 1,120 are filled.
