Tecumseh statue dedication stirs mixed Shawnee response
The Tecumseh statue dedication Friday draws expected crowds though some Shawnee descendants resist, calling it a white man’s statue and hoping it boosts tourism rather than honor. Supporters say the bronze figure educates visitors about Shawnee history near Harrisburg, with the Two Great Rivers Powwow set for Saturday at Southeastern Illinois College.

Perry County may lose coal tax to Randolph County
Perry County officials fear they are losing sales tax revenue from the Zeigler No. 11 coal mine as surface openings sit in Randolph County. Treasurer Bigham-Reiman estimates possible losses of up to 90,000 in 1997 and 30,000 in 2001, with out of state coal sales exempt from Illinois tax. County seeks further investigation while maintaining reserves and paying bills.
