Eastern Cornbelt carcass prices closed weak with varying bf grades and weights. Illinois direct hog purchases totaled 17 537 with mostly steady to light demand and moderate offerings. Boar prices ranged from 4.00 to 20.00 for different weight classes and over 600 lb hogs reached 24.00 in rare cases.
Chicago AP reports grain futures moved lower with December corn down 2 1/2 cents to 2.57 1/2 a bushel while December wheat held at 3.81 3/4 and December oats slipped 1/4 cent to 2.13 1/2. November soybeans also declined 4 1/2 cents to 5.35 1/4 a bushel.
House Republicans moved two tax cut bills aimed at investors hit by the market swoon. One bill would raise the capital loss deduction from 3000 to 8250 starting in 2002, while the other would push back mandatory 401k and IRA withdrawal ages to 75 by 2007 and lift contribution limits to 5000 for IRAs and 15000 for 401ks by 2003.
Stocks rose as optimism over an end to the West Coast labor dispute boosted sentiment. The Dow Jones gained about 78.65, trading between 7,331.42 and 7,622.66 before settling near 7,501.49, with the S&P 500 at 798.55 and the NYSE Index at 437.22.
