Robbery suspect slain at roadblock on I 57

One man is dead and a trooper slightly wounded after a gunfight at a roadblock on Interstate 57 south of Marion. Lawrence Miles 24 of Bastrop La died at Marion Memorial Hospital after exchanging fire with officers. Reginald Johnson 23 also of Bastrop is in custody.

Ice slicked crash blocks Illinois 13 near Kondale

Eastbound Illinois 13 traffic halted for about 30 minutes after a car driven by 74 year old Vesta Schneider of Du Quoin slid on ice and wedged between the sides Kondale. Police said no injuries occurred and the 10 a.m. report routed traffic onto Old Illinois 13.

Area's first official snow creates driving problems

Southern Illinois reported its first official snowfall today, with light snow totaling less than an inch. Weather observer Neil Kunycky noted localized activity and slick spots on highways during the early morning. Temperatures were in the mid-teens with wind chills below zero, and Friday is forecast partly sunny and cold with wind chills near 10 degrees. The weekend outlook shows mid-30s and sunny skies.

Elderly patient dies after eviction from Franklin Hospital unit

Lionne Warren, 94, died from cancer after refusing to leave the Franklin Hospital Skilled Care Nursing Unit in Benton. A Medicaid eviction sparked a class action by Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation seeking reinstatement of the state program and damages.
