SIU C students protest anti Iran sentiment on campus

More than 400 SIU Carbondale students rallied at the Student Center amid chants and flags opposing Iran's hostage situation. Iranian students faced taunts as about 20 were surrounded in a cafeteria standoff. An arrest was made for obstructing justice as police escorted Iranians from the building. university officials emphasize free speech and plan to issue parade permits if formally applied.

Governor Quie urges calm after kidnapping plot in Minnesota

In St Paul Minnesota five Iranian students were arrested at a governor's mansion event as part of an alleged kidnapping conspiracy targeting Governor Al Quie. One suspect Antoun Stamboulieh 25 released later. four others Hor Moz Asadi Feraidonoon Ghodoosi Mohammad Noori and Hady Heidary held on conspiracy to kidnap and assault charges. Police recovered two shotguns and a pistol. the governor urged calm and called for church bells at 10 a.m. on Sunday for hostages in Tehran.

Iranians in U S to be deported for noncompliance

President Carter ordered the Justice Department to deport all Iranians in the United States on student visas who are not complying with immigration laws. Spokesman Jody Powell cited about 50,000 Iranians in the country violating rules. The administration also halted military spare parts shipments to Iran valued at $300 million as a mild retaliation.
