School Finance Workshop at SIU C
Representatives from the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund State Board of Education and State Employees Retirement System will lead the 14th annual School District Financial Accounting Workshop at Southern Illinois University Carbondale from July 13 to 17. The program targets school bookkeepers accountants and managers with sessions on budgeting retirement changes social security accounting and auditing. Tamaroa picks Gene Knapp as new grade school chief
Gene Knapp, 53, named Tamaroa Grade School superintendent for the 1981-82 year. He aims to be a helper, letting teachers run their jobs while maintaining discipline with parent and staff support. Knapp, previously Hardin Grade School principal in Calhoun County, has 13 years in teaching and counseling and a prior stint as a sewer contractor. He will be paid 23500 annually and lives in Edwardsville.

Three Area Highway Bids Total 1.74 Million
Apparent low bids totaling 1.74 million dollars were submitted for three Southern Illinois IDOT projects. In Franklin County, Illinois 148 resurfacing near Christopher, Evansville Cement Finishers bid 699,083 on a 785,000 project. In Jackson County, Carbondale concrete work on Giant City Road went to Evansville Cement Finishers at 613,357 on a 793,000 project. In Johnson County, Vienna bridge work and widening on U.S. 45 saw Superior Structures Inc. bid 426,100 on a 480,000 project.

Nine face drug charges after Union County arrests
Union County Sheriff Larry Tripp said nine people face drug charges including three juveniles. Barely out of high school, Laurie Rawls and Steve Hente both 18 of McClure along with Mark Puffer 18 of Jonesboro and Michael Kaufmann 18 of McClure were arrested on cannabis delivery charges, while Mark Hubbs 18 of Jonesboro and Alan Ponder 28 of McClure were jailed on delivery of a controlled substance. Bonds ranged from 2500 to 4000 dollars. juveniles were given notices to appear. The arrests followed a May 18 press conference about a three month probe into drug activity at four schools in Union and Jackson counties. More arrests are anticipated soon as the investigation continues.
