SIU joins Illinois trade mission to China for coal research

Four Southern Illinois University representatives join a nine day, IDCEO sponsored trade mission to China led by DCEO Director Jack Lavin. The delegation of 10 includes SIUC Vice Chancellor for Research John Koropchak, Coal Research Center Director John Mead, Professor Tomasz Wiltowski and SIU Trustee John Simmons. They will visit Beijing and Shanghai to discuss energy, coal and ethanol research opportunities and potential trade relations.

Illinois veteran delivers Memorial Day address at Woodlawn

Staff Sgt. Jeff Rose, a member of the Illinois Army National Guard, spoke at Carbondale’s Memorial Day ceremony at Woodlawn Cemetery. He recalled returning from 15 months in Iraq with C Company 2-123rd Field Artillery and downplayed heroic labels, calling himself a guard member who did his part. The routine 140 year tradition drew local officials and veterans groups.

President Bush honors veterans at Arlington Memorial Day

President Bush delivered a Memorial Day message at Arlington National Cemetery noting 270 of the nearly 2,500 fallen since September 11 2001 are buried there. He urged continued resolve in the war on terror and praised the sacrifices of service members and families.
