Mine suppliers brace for end of strike in coal belt
The United Mine Workers proposed contract in Washington faces rank and file approval, risking more layoffs in Southern Illinois as mines remain shut. Companies like Norge, Koppers, and Anixter Cable Service report heavy cuts while Illinois Central Gulf and MoPac caution on coal-related staffing. Labor ties to coal weaken regional suppliers, with sizable firms and small operators alike reducing crews and output.

Threatened air traffic strike could hit area flights
Area airport officials warn a PATCO walkout could halt regular service from Southern Illinois to major cities. Small craft flights to near airports would continue with UNICOM traffic reporting. Complete walkouts would limit jet service to long routes, while short hauls may be banned or restricted under FAA contingency plans.
