Mystery sarcophagus at Carbondale memorial site tale of lovers

At Wood lawn Cemetery in Carbondale a two foot high sarcophagus on stone blocks sparks romantic legends. The best known tale says a Southern belle from Vicksburg married J W Landrum and, after promising not to be buried in Yankee soil, was interred with Vicksburg soil, while his own burial later nearby is hinted by a small tombstone reading J W um. Some recall a Union soldier buried there, then moved when a Confederate burial was proposed, but most sources favor the Southern belle story including Mrs Laura Green who recalled Mr Landrum as a rich husband deeply devoted to his wife.
