Metropolis man gets five years for Marion Dollar General robbery
Michael Tyson, 44, of Metropolis, pleaded guilty to armed robbery in the December attack on Marion’s Dollar General on North Carbon Street. He was sentenced to 10 years with day for day good time, plus three years supervised release. Authorities recovered a handgun, cash, and a masked bag used during the robbery.

John Lipe, longtime Union County educator and coach, died at his Cobden home at 71. He served 24 years at Anna-Jonesboro High School as teacher, coach, principal and interim superintendent, retiring in 1986, and later helped start the Cobden Racquetball Center in 1978.
