Social Security tax could rise beyond current cuts
Washington reports that the payroll tax may reach 10 percent or more over the coming century even if Reagan benefit cuts pass. Budget Director Stockman told the House Ways and Means subcommittee critics misunderstand the crisis, while former actuary Robertson warned of rising Medicare costs ignored by long term Social Security projections. The current tax at 6.65 percent would rise to 7.65 by 1990, with Medicare funding absorption noted.

The Senate approved moving a coal mine medical training program from the Department of Public Health to the state Department of Mines and Minerals. Sen. Gene Johns said the bill has mine operator and worker support and that the mines agency has more experience with mining accidents. The Senate also sent to the House a $158,792,800 appropriation for SIU to run system operations at Carbondale, Edwardsville, Springfield and Alton, below the higher recommended figure of $163,775,500 that includes $2.2 million in Illinois Building Authority rentals.
