Coast Guard reports barge collision kinks Shawneetown bridge
A barge struck the Shawneetown bridge at about 3 a.m. causing a three hour closure while engineers checked structural integrity. It reopened before 7 a.m. after officials deemed the span safe to cross. In Carbondale, Daniel Distel, 30, is sought after vanishing from Mount Vernon after Friday travel, last seen in Pennsylvania. He drives a black 1999 Pontiac Grand Am with PA plate ELV 001. Distel is 6 ft tall, 260 pounds, brown hair, green eyes. Call Carbondale police at 457-3200 with information. Also: Elkville resident Jason A. Thompson, 22, dies from a one car crash on Kimmel Bridge near Truax Track Road and Glendale School Road after the vehicle overturned. A large anhydrous ammonia leak is reported at Randy Meyers Farm Service on Matuskey Hollow Road, prompting multiple agencies to respond and the valve to be closed. In Carbondale, a storage trailer break-in at a 700 block East Park Street construction site yields multiple power tools as missing. A Sony PlayStation 2 is stolen from a Carbondale apartment. A Perry County man is charged with careless driving after a crash injuring a Vergennes woman.
