Southern Illinois carpenters approve new two year contract

About 1,500 union carpenters from 11 Local unions in Jackson, Williamson, Franklin, Perry, Johnson, Union, Saline, Gallatin, Pope, Pulaski, Hardin, Massac and Alexander counties ratify a two year labor pact. The agreement raises wages by 1.20 per hour retroactive to April 1, 55 cents on Oct 1, and 1.50 on April 1, 1982, with a March 31, 1983 expiry. Overtime rules on Saturdays remain mostly the same for standard work but heavy construction and highway crews gain time and a half for the first eight hours. Art Vincent of the Egyptian District Council of Carpenters calls the vote a win and notes the economy prompted wage adjustments after a three year contract.
