Memorial Day Rites Set in Carbondale with Notables

Memorial Day ceremonies in Carbondale will feature Harold E. Stassen and Gen. John Hodge. The day includes a parade from Woodlawn Cemetery to McAndrew Stadium, wreaths at the cemetery, jet flyovers, an address by Stassen, a reading of General Order No. 11 by Hodge, and a large military display at Mardale airport.

Missing Union County sheriff’s son and friend sought

Two 15 year olds from Jonesboro, Ronald Batson son of Sheriff Earl Batson and Terry Hindman, disappeared Thursday after stating they would hike. They were last seen near Walnut Grove and may have headed west toward Kansas.

Memorial Week End Likely to Be Cool

The Associated Press reports a cool Memorial Day weekend across the central and western United States. The cool belt stretches from the western plains to Ohio and Texas, with below normal temperatures around the Great Lakes and freezing readings in parts of Nebraska. Methodist Assignments to Be Listed Sunday at Marion

Delegates at the 12th annual Southern Illinois Methodist conference in Marion will hear two talks by Bishop J Waskom Pickett who has lived in India since 1910. He visits the U S for three months and will speak at afternoon and evening services. Conference meetings continue with a banquet by Dr Russell Grow president of McKendree College. The session closes Sunday afternoon with an ordination ceremony and new ministerial appointments.

Taft Hartley Violation Charged Against United Mine Workers

National Labor Relations board examiner ruled United Mine Workers violated the Taft Hartley act by invading six non union mines in Western Kentucky during last year s soft coal dispute. He cited a 200 car caravan and about 2000 men threatening workers and forcing leaves until union membership. The panel urged the UMW and District 23 to cease illegal activity and post notices, with the order enforceable in federal court if not appealed within 20 days.

Du Quoin Meter Law Quashed

Circuit Judge Edward Bareis of East St. Louis permanently enjoined Du Quoin officials from acting on a city ordinance authorizing parking meters or the contract with the meter company. Six local businessmen sued saying the measure gave the mayor illegal powers and was adopted without a public reading. The company had procured over 400 meters earlier in the year and the meters remained stored as the suit proceeded, with the city incurring insurance costs.

Neighbors Swap Houses Now They Own the Homes They Live In

Hutchinson Kansas May 27 AP two neighbors Chester Guettche and Swan discovered they lived in the wrong houses for years and had been paying taxes on the wrong properties. An error in the Var Emans estate abstracts mixed up lots containing 722 East Sixth and 724 East Sixth leading to swapped homes after county checks. The men agreed to an even house swap with Guettche assuming the mortgage on his new home while continuing tax comparisons over the back fence.

Soil Plan Meeting Set in Carbondale Preparations Begin

Soil Conservation Service directors from six counties will meet June 1 at the Murphysboro Farm Bureau annex to plan the Mississippi Valley soil conservation meeting in Carbondale August 7 to 9. The event aims to attract delegates from about 90 soil districts statewide. After the morning session, directors from Perry Williamson Jackson Union Alexander and Pulaski counties will tour two Jackson County farms to view spring oats and new alfalfa and brome grass seedings. Merle Hickam's farm near Carbondale will also be visited to see alfalfa and pasture. Hickam keeps 77 head of steers on the pasture.

Fire halts at Beckemeier-Jansen lumber yard

A May 27 blaze at the Beckemeier Jansen lumber yard in St. Louis caused about $100,000 in damage after an electrical storm. Firemen battled the flames for over two hours as lightning struck the south end of the yard.

Locust Swarm Hits Southern Illinois and Missouri Orchards

A large outbreak of periodical cicadas, the 17 year variety, spread through Cape Girardeau and adjoining counties in Missouri and into Anna Jonesboro and Carbondale in Illinois. Extension agent A. D. Arnhardt said orchards face major damage as eggs hatch and larvae feed near tree roots. J. N. Cummins noted the insects appear locally, not from Missouri, and that tetraethyl pyrophosphate has been effective but dangerous to handle. The five day window after emergence is critical for control.

Missing Chicago boy presumed drowned after river search

LaSalle county deputies drag the Illinois River near Starved Rock State Park for 14 year old Carl Ignarski missing since Thursday. Sheriff Edward T. Ryan says he may have fallen from Lovers' Leap while on a St Stanislaus school outing with about 60 pupils. Handprint marks were found on the cliff above the water.

Man Runs Amok at Dogwalk Wrecks Store

Modglin Claude Looney, 34, was held in Williamson County jail after a late night rampage at a Dogwalk grocery near Marion. Deputies say he smashed windows, wrecked the cash register, and damaged store fixtures, with charges of drunkenness and destruction of property filed. Sheriff Cannon said no motive is known.
