Violent storms spawned tornadoes in Piedmont and Oklahoma City area killing at least 14 people over two days. A prior massive twister in Joplin, Missouri left more than 120 dead. In Oklahoma City suburbs eight died and 70 hurt as searchers targeted a missing 3-year-old brother of a 15 month old killed.
Forecasts from the National Weather Service in Paducah and local forecasters warned of a severe storm system in Southern Illinois, with the region bracing for possible tornadoes. Schools closed early, temporary shelters opened across Williamson County and in Marion, Herrin, Carterville, Johnston City, Cambria, Crab Orchard, Hurst, and Creal Springs, and the Jackson County Courthouse and The View Church in Carbondale offered shelter.
