Gov Blagojevich proposes funding schools by selling or leasing the state lottery to raise ten billion dollars over four years with 1.5 billion set for local classroom construction. Critics warn it could expand gambling, though the governor opposes that. Local officials react cautiously as election questions loom.
Governor outlines a broad program to overhaul Illinois schools. Measures include raising 10 billion via lottery stock, 1.5 billion for construction, district consolidation, themed and split schools, expanded special education, teacher training alignment, mentoring for superintendents, incentives with unions, 40 million for new textbooks and tech, library staffing, vocational upgrades, preschool expansion, full day kindergarten aid, after school tutoring, extended year for underperformers, and state control of failing districts.

Rowlett noted the close-by cafe allows him to finish estimates and bid forms without a long drive from Marion.
Union Pacific will raise speeds through Marion from 35 to 49 mph over the next week on the north south line parallel to Illinois 37. The change begins Thursday with 35 to 40 mph, then reaches 49 mph on June 1. Faster trains reduce crossing wait times, from 1 minute 37 seconds at 35 mph to about 1 minute 2 seconds at 49 mph.
