Violent deaths in Baghdad exceed five thousand in a year
An AP survey of morgues in Baghdad and four provinces counted 5,558 violent deaths from May 1 2003 to April 30. The toll covers criminal and political violence, with morgue figures excluding most auto crash deaths and terrorist bombings. Officials caution the count is not nationwide and omits many casualties from large bombings.
