Wavell Dies, Noted British Field Marshal in London
Earl Archibald Wavell, veteran British field marshal and former viceroy of India, died after abdominal surgery on May 5. A daring strategist, he led early Allied victories in Africa and later served in India and the Far East, earning recognition including the Legion of Merit from President Truman. He left a son, Viscount Keren, and two daughters.
