Johnston City District Hires Five Teachers
Johnston City Unit District Board hires five teachers for 1968-64 session. Vivian Waller SIU senior from Christoper will teach English and speech. Mary Ellen Black SIU senior from Carbondale will teach business education and English. William Matthews at Zeigler-Royalton High School will teach chemistry physics and mathematics. Judith Hamlin and Joan Christopher hired as elementary teachers. Hamlin in Trico system and Christopher in Cahokia system. Resignations accepted from two elementary teachers. calendar set for 1963-64.

Summer Park Program Outlined At Carbondale District
The Carbondale Park District outlined a summer craft and recreation program running June 17 to August 19 using Winkler Attucks Lincoln and Oakland schools for activities. Supt. Lattmann said offerings include arts and crafts dramatics games sports and storytelling with swimming at Crab Orchard Beach a day camp at Reservoir Park and Dennis instruction at Southern Illinois University. The district leases grounds provides lighted fields for Junior Baseball League and transportation to Crab Orchard Lake and the reservoir. Supervisors needed for activities lifeguards for swimming instruction and meals served with breakfast bacon and pancakes. Charlene Boucher 20 of Murphysboro placed on probation and given 90 days in jail on theft plea. The Junior Baseball League has 525 boys on 42 teams. Vanhorn said league funds come from Vinson Erickson. Board granted 300 for caps and 300 for improvements and light maintenance.

Fire starts at West Frankfort home. damage estimated
Mrs. Carl Van Wey of 206 East Elm Street West Frankfort started a small fire at her residence on Wednesday when wiring short circuited. Fire crew responded at 9 30 a m. Fire Chief Fred Harkins put damage at about five dollars later revised to a larger sum.

Study Overseas Winters Wins Asian Grant
Richard Winters of Murphysboro is one of three SIU students to receive a University of Hawaii East West Center grant for study in Asia. The fellowship covers expenses travel and a personal allowance from a Congress funded program begun in 1960. Winters plans graduate work in comparative government at Hawaii focusing on counter guerrilla warfare with a field trip to northeast Thailand for thesis research.

Stage design contest entries shown at SIU lounge
Stage scenes designed by students from twenty seven colleges and universities are exhibited in the formal lounge of Southern Illinois University's Center. The designs, entries in the second national intercollegiate scenic design contest held at SIU, will be exhibited until May 30. Awards will be announced Tuesday.
