Take from Scott give to schools
Democrats face a stubborn budget knife as they push for school funding. In House Appropriations, Rep. Ted Leverenz failed to cut about 250000 from Attorney General Scott’s office, tying 13-13. Debates echoed on university and state agency spending while a local school income tax measure passed 34 to 74, and a rate-balance bill failed in the Senate with 16 of 30 votes.

Orlov Sentenced as Sakharov Is Detained at Courthouse
Soviet dissident Yuri Orlov received a 12 year term of hard labor and exile in Moscow after a verdict for anti Soviet agitation and propaganda. Andrei Sakharov and his wife were detained for about five hours outside the courthouse before release. Sakharov publicly demanded entry, a scuffle with police ensued, and he and his wife were later moved to a green bus with cheers from supporters. Orlov, a physicist and dissident, led a group distributing documents to Western officials to spotlight Helsinki violations. Tass noted the British Foreign Office comment while omitting U.S. remarks.
