Morganza spillway opens to divert Mississippi River floodwaters
The Morganza floodgate opened for the first time in nearly four decades, releasing river water into the Atchafalaya Basin to ease pressure on Baton Rouge and New Orleans levees. The move flooded about 100 acres of dry land within minutes, threatening thousands of homes and farmland while authorities planned to open additional gates. Residents along the Atchafalaya Basin prepared sandbags and temporary levees as water moved toward Morgan City and the Gulf of Mexico, with civil defenses and local residents bracing for weeks of high water.
